About Hassan

Hassan is located 187kms from Bangalore lying in the Malnad and Maidan districts of Karnataka. The city derives its name from its presiding diety Goddess Hassanamba which in kanana language mean 'Smiling mother'. The Gorur Dam, which is also known as the Hemavathi Dam, is a beautiful and striking picnic spot that attracts tourists from all across the country. The dam is built across the river Hemavathi, which is a tributary of the river Kaveri and is surrounded by lush greenery on its side, which adds to the beauty of the dam and further appeals to its visitors. Not only is this dam well known for its scenic beauty, but it also attracts bird watchers as it has a wide range of birds that it is home to. Built in the year 1979, the dam is located near the city of Hassan in the state of Karnataka, and serves other multiple purposes as well, such as providing water for irrigation, drinking and other household purposes. The Gorur Dam covers a total catchment area of 2,810 square kilometres. With a length of 4,692 meters and a height of 58.5 meters, the reservoir has six large radial spillway gates in all. The Gorur Dam is a complete package that one can visit on the weekend, or on a short vacation. The views that the place offers are breathtaking, the surroundings are spotless and well maintained, and the lush green park serves as the perfect resting spot for visitors.
